The Adventures of Flat Stanley

So our first grade neice out in Maryland has a class project. She colored a man named Flat Stanely and mailed him to us and we're to take him on adventures and then mail pictures and a letter back to the school so the class can learn about other places.
We spent Sunday taking Flat Stanley to all the places we took our neice the two Thanksgivings in a row she and her mother came out. See what Flat Stanley did:
Here's the bay across the street from the airport...look at all the cool boats!

Then we headed to Ocean Beach...
We saw the pier and went seashell hunting...

Flat Stanley also met other flat people.
We ate fish tacos too!

We had a great time doing this project for our neice. We hope class enjoys Flat Stanley's adventures as much as we did!

Update...

It's been quite a while...for those of you who don't know, hubby's hours at work have been cut back and he's currenlty looking for a new job. This has sped up work on the house as far as diggin out the yard. I have pics, but as hubby's work has slowed down, my work has increased and kept me travelling. Picture updates to come.

Still Number One

So hubby got his stitches out on Wednesday. I guess I'm a little naive, never having stitches before. I thought it would be healed.

He got them out, but there's still a huge canyon in his finger where the cut is. He has to wear those fabric stitches until it's fully healed.
Here's some stitches pics and fabric stitches pictures.
Before..
After...
He's still Number One.

Anzo Borrego to the Salton Sea

We decided to journey to the desert on Saturday. We wanted to see the wild flowers so we hopped into the Jeep Cherokee and off we went. When we got there it was much hotter than I expected, but better than what hubby thought. I don't like to be too hot...I think it was about 80 degrees and dry, dry, dry, dry!

As it turned out, we missed the best of the wild flowers. There were still a lot of white and yellow ones, but very few other colors. The weekend before was the best weekend and then the hot weather moved in and started scorching them. How can you argue with Mother Nature? We did still get some awesome pictures so I can't really complain. And really, they were still beautiful!
So while we were driving through the desert, we came across this...this guy went over some REALLY gnarly stuff with these kids in the cart! I couldn't believe it. Where was child services when you needed them?
Then we were headed back to San Diego I saw a sign for the Salton Sea. It's only 30 miles from where we were and we both kind of wanted to see what the hoop-la was about. For those of you who don't know, the Salton Sea was created by a damn breaking back in like the 40's or 50's. It created this huge lake in the middle of the desert which flourished with tilapia.
It was billed as the next Palm Springs, but with a lake. So a ton of building started happening, rich people from all over came and went fishing. Then after like 5 years or something, the salinity of the lake increased and huge batches of fish would start dying and they would have these weird random floods.

And, yes, hubby was still Number 1!

After that it's all downhill. We heard it smelled really bad, and it did. Like Tiajuana for those of you who've been there. Or like your wet suit if you don't wash the salt water off, yuck! We didn't see any dead fish because hubby wouldn't stop long enough for us to look. He wanted to see Slab City and Salvation Mountain (you may have seen these in the Into the Wild movie).

I have to say, the Salton Sea wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, but the communities were REALLY depressing...

We felt bad for this new business. We couldn't figure out what it was and it sure didn't look open!
So this was the funniest thing I have ever seen. That's a satellite dish used for the umbrella and metal chairs around a fire pit. This was in a NEIGHBORHOOD. The sign says it's the Fireside Lounge (you can't tell in the picture).

So we continued out and found Slab City which is a spot in the desert where people will drive their RV's out to and spend the winter (or shorter periods of time). It turns into this huge community. Right across the way is Salvation Mountain.

Salvation Mountain is a work of art by Leonard Knight (who is still working on it). God told him to spread the word and he does. He's really nice and we got to chat with him for a while. Hubby says it's the most meaningful mountain he ever climbed. We plan on going back when we can.
After Salvation Mountain we headed to Calexico. It's a border city whose counter part is Mexicali. Cute, right? In Calexico there's this random place call Rosa's Plane Food which is literaly on the tarmac right next to the runway of the airport there. No fence blocking you in or anything. BEST Mexican food in my life. I mean THE BEST!!! Hubby used to do surveys in Calexico for burrowing owls and a colleague who used to go there told him about it. Some locals of Calexico took him there. Hubby takes any chance he can get to eat there since it's 1 1/2 hours away from San Diego. You know when you're the only white people (okay, half asian and white) it's going to be good. The waitress didn't even speak English! I can't wait to go back!!!
And never to be left out...one of the reasons I don't suggesting getting a cat. This is literally how Little Mookie sleeps, in between your legs and he's total dead weight. Try turning over at 3 AM and he won't budge!

Pig Man in Dallas, TX Take 2

So maybe it's just the Hertz return in Dallas, TX.

So again, a car cut me off going into the Hertz in Dallas, TX. The car stopped, REVERSED down the lane and then CUT ME OFF to get into the Hertz. All while he was on his cell phone.

I was steamed, but I decided to be the bigger person. I didn't even honk this time because I didn't want to be yelled at like last time.

So we pull up in the line. It was really busy. The whole lane next to our lane was waiting to check their cars in as well. It was also 40 degrees!

So we get out of our cars and the man gets off his cell phone. When the car to his left is getting check in, he stops the Hertz person, and asks them to do his car because he's in a hurry.

I couldn't take it.

I said, "NO! We're all waiting dude! All these people are waiting and you're going to go ahead and cut in front of everyone like you cut me off to get in here!?! Where's the fairness in that!?!"

He just stared at me stupidly. He got to cut in line. Now, he was ahead of me so it wasn't like he was cutting me, but it was the principle. I'm so tired of living in everyone else's world where the rules never apply to anyone. Come on!

The funny part is he ended up on my shuttle one person ahead of me on the airline we were flying and one person ahead of me in the security line. Good thing he cut in front of everyone at Hertz.

After security I lost him. I was hungry and decided to buy a sandwich for dinner. I walk into the food place and there he is, leisurely waiting for food in line in front of me. He turns and looks at me and I say, "Great". He blushes and turned back around.

What is it with Dallas?

My Husband, Tim the Toolman Taylor

Yesterday I was standing in the kitchen making my homemade spaghetti and meatballs. Tamanda and their son, and our friend Brown were coming over for dinner.

So I'm standing there at about 12 PM getting my sauce to its simmering point and hubby is in the garage drywalling a small part of the wall up so that we can move shelves and organize. I hear him scream bloody murder and go running. I threw the door open and he screams that he needs running water. I throw my spaghetti spoon down and run and turn the water on as he comes running in the house.

He tells me he's cut himself, badly, and he will need to go to the hospital. I say, "are you sure?" and look down. Bad mistake. He then tells me he needs a towel. I go running as the neighbor comes running up our driveway because he heard hubby scream. I come running back with a HUGE towel for his left pointer finger. He looks at me and says, "Do we have something smaller than that?" I'm so retarded.

So I get a small wash cloth and wrap it up. I then proceed to run around turning everything off, grabbing my purse, and grabbing his wallet. While I've been doing this, our wonderful neighbors have been trucking everything from the driveway into the garage so it won't get left outside. They are calming hubby down, telling him not to look at it. They confirm I know where the nearest emergency room is, which was awesome because I wasn't even really thinking, I was just going to drive, and off we go.

We get there and 4.5 hours later, and 8 stitches later, hubby's finger points straight out like he's screaming, "I'm # 1!"

I watched the MD sew him up. Hubby cut himself well, he didn't do a half-assed job! After the reassembly, the MD points to hubby's tip (hubby isn't watching, of course) and tells me if the circulation doesn't return, hubby will most likely need a skin graft. I hope that doesn't happen. It will be such a pain the ass for hubby!!!
